The Detour Reef Lighthouse is located at the Mouth of the St. Mary's River, which connects Lake Huron to Lake Superior. The light is located here because of a shoal (the so-called "reef"), which would otherwise be dangerous for ships traveling up or down the river. Currently, the light is owned by a non-profit group, the DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society, which offers tours and a volunteer keepers program.
