Little Point Sable Lighthouse was originally named Petite Pointe Au Sable Lighthouse. It was first operational in 1874. Originally, the lighthouse included a two-story keepers dwelling, but this was destroyed in the 1950s when the light was electrified, eliminating the need for a keeper. The tower was sand-blasted to elimninate the need for regular painting, making this light unique among lighthouses in the Great Lakes, if not the world. Today, the light is maintained by the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association, which also maintains other lighthouses on Lake Michigan. The tower may be climbed for a small fee in season. The lighthouse is on a secondary unit of Silver Lake State Park, so entrance fees may apply. The original Fresnel lens is still installed in the tower, although the lamp has been replaced by a white LED.
