I had wanted a picture of this lighthouse in winter, but I really wanted it with a fresh coat of snow. No footprints, blades of grass poking out, or dirty clumps of snow for me! So, I set off one day in late afternoon while Mother Nature was just getting started. It didn’t take long before I was questioning my sanity, as the roads were getting slicker as I drove halfway across Michigan to get to this lighthouse. It was a trip that normally would have taken just over an hour and a half. But on this night, it took closer to 2 and a half hours! When I finally arrived, the scene was just as I had hoped! A thick layer of fresh snow covered the ground! As a bonus, even though the lighthouse technically does not have an operating lantern, the keepers had a light going that made up for that loss. The snow was still coming down as I got out my camera and tripod. Keeping to the far edges of the property, I took a few shots of one side of the building and worked my way to the front. I planted my tripod and got a few shots before snow started hitting the front of the lens. Not having a ready way to wipe it clean, I decided to head back to the car and packed everything away after wiping off the snow. I had been there shooting no more than about 20 minutes! The trip home was even worse, and I lost count of how many cars I saw off the side of the road! However, when I got the images loaded onto the computer, I was thrilled at the result!
