The first official lighthouse in South Haven was a wooden, pyramidal tower that became operational in May, 1872. It was replaced in 1902 by a metal circular tower. The new tower was originally painted white and was first lit in 1903. The metal catwalk was relocated from the Calumet Lighthouse in Illinois in 1925. The light is now operated by the Historical Association of South Haven. The light is still operational, using a fixed red light. The catwalk is fitted with lights along its entire length.
