White Shoal Lighthouse

White Shoal Lighthouse was first lit in 1910. Built on White Shoal in Lake Michigan near the western end of the Straits of Mackinac, the light is built on a wooden crib structure 72 feet square and 18 feet, 6 inches high filled with stone. This supports a concrete pier 70 feet square and 20 feet above lake level. The tower is 9 stories high and there are loving quarters for 4 keepers. Originally, the tower was painted white, and the color scheme changed a couple of times until 1954, when the current white with red stripes was introduced. The light was fully automated in 1976 and the crew was removed. The light is now under the ownership of the White Shoal Light Historical Preservation Society, which offers tours and does preservation work for the light.
